Join us for an Audience Favorite: The Elias Ladino Ensemble in Concert

The Elias Ladino Ensemble presents music of the Spanish Jews. The term “Ladino” refers to a distinct dialect spoken only by the Sephardic Jews and has evolved from Old Spanish. The distinctive “Ladino soundtrack” depicts familiar aspects of life - songs of love, lust, drinking, and disappointment. Many of the songs date back to ancient Spain, while some reveal melodies and rhythms of the Balkan and Middle Eastern communities where the Sephardic Jews lived in exile. In the hands of The Elias Ladino Ensemble the music remains as vibrant as the community once was.

About The Elias Ladino Ensemble Performers:

Daniel Elias (musical director and clarinetist) is a founding member of the ensemble. The grandson of Rabbi David Elias Cassorla and the son of Joe Elias, he has been performing Ladino music since the age of 15. Maurice Sedacca (guitar and oud) is also a founding member. A descendant of the Sedacca family of Chanakale, Turkey, Maurice’s playing is influenced by jazz, gypsy, Middle Eastern and classical training. Marco Brehm plays double bass for cabaret, dances, concert performances and recordings. He has played Klezmer, Ladino and folk dances throughout the US, including Lincoln Center, New York's Town Hall, and the Yale School of Music. Casey Bond (percussionist) is a perennial favorite at bellydance and music festivals. She’s the founder/artistic director for the Raq Steady student ensemble, and her original drum compositions are featured on the CD “Raq Steady: Greatest Hits Volume One.”
