Kids age 4-8: Join us for a special read-aloud with local author Nancy Castaldo, and learn about the remarkable history of whales in the Hudson! Stay for some deep-sea doodling and aquatic arts and crafts. It’ll be a whale of a time!

This kid-friendly picture book is a true story about how community action saved the whales of New York Harbor and reversed the effects of climate change. Spanning from pre-colonization to today, learn how the industrial revolution, overfishing, and pollution drove whales away from New York Harbor and the Hudson River by the early 20th century.

Passionate citizens were able to join together and clean up the harbor through activism and legislation. the first whales were spotted in the Hudson after over 100 years in 2019! This uplifting environmental success story full of towering skyscrapers and underwater dramatics highlights the power of community and how we can coexist with wildlife!


Whales in the Hudson? Award-winning STEM author Nancy Castaldo has written dozens of books about our planet, but her newest stories swim close to home. Based in New York’s Hudson Valley, Nancy brings her global research and photography—from the Galápagos to Russia—to the Hudson River in two new releases: the picture book Whales in the City and the middle-grade nonfiction title Riverkeeper.

Nancy loves sharing her adventures with readers and believes everyone can make a difference. Her books are designed to inform, empower, and inspire young people to care for the world around them.
